About this time last year, I was researching forecasts on what trends would look like for 2018. As you know it’s always exciting to see what’s coming in the new year, but the funny thing is, there’s not really a hard stop and start between the trends on a calendar basis. Instead, what we see is a flow that carries through, with slight nuances that change the landscape year over year. So before we get into what 2019 will bring, let’s take a look back at what’s been at the top of trends in 2018.

Designing an aesthetically beautiful waterfront home starts with considering the house’s placement relative to the water. Having buildings or facilities near the water (like a dock) make the house more convenient for water activities and generally raises its value. On the other hand, having infrastructure that maintains a certain distance from the water means less vulnerability to flooding and saltwater-related wear-and-tear. It’s just a matter of personal preference.
Almost any architectural style will work for waterfront homes. What’s important is how the design of a home takes advantage of the fact that it’s on a picturesque waterfront. In other words: great views are a must. If you don’t have plenty of windows or at least a balcony that’s overlooking the water, what do you need a waterfront home for? There’s nothing like waking up in the morning and peacefully having your morning cup of tea or coffee while seated on a balcony that’s pointed at the coast.

A small business in a small town makes big news with solar energy. Atlantic Millwork and Cabinetry is a family owned small business in Lewes specializing in windows, doors, cabinetry, decking, millwork products and more. Recently, they hosted Senator Tom Carper (D) from Delaware and Kathy Beisner, the acting director for USDA Rural development in MD/DE for a tour of their facility and their new solar energy system.

With the aid of a grant from Rural Energy for America Program that covered 25% of the cost, Atlantic Millwork & Cabinetry commissioned The CNC
Solar Company in Rehoboth Beach to install a 143 kW DC system on the southern facing upper roof of their warehouse.
Our mission at USDA Rural Development is to help increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life in Rural America,” said Beisner. “One way we do that is through the Rural Energy for America Program that has helped roughly 55 rural small businesses and farmers in Delaware improve their bottom line by installing renewable energy systems and energy efficient equipment. Through Federal loan guarantees and grants the program helps cut carbon emissions, creates jobs and saves families hundreds of dollars on their utility bills each year.”
Small businesses across the United States are using USDA financing in innovative ways as a means to creating more sustainable communities and the enhancement of economic competitiveness.
