For many homeowners, hardwood floors are a must-have: They’re classic, attractive, and add value to the home. But once a homeowner has those hardwood floors, how do they take care of them so they retain as much of that value as possible over the lifespan of the house?
Know the Enemies of Hardwood Floors
Once homeowners understand what damages a hardwood floor, they can make sure to protect it. Top enemies of hardwood floors are moisture and scratching.
It’s smart to develop a policy of mopping up spills as soon as possible before the liquid has time to penetrate the floor. To protect floors in the winter and spring, when shoes may track in snow or water, use a boot tray in the entrance or carefully wipe the feet on a doormat to remove moisture from shoes.
Protect furniture with felt pads and avoid walking on hardwood floors with high heels (which can damage the wood surface), so that floors will age much better.
If there are children in the home, provide rugs in play areas so that children do not accidentally damage the wood floors during play. It’s also more comfortable for the little ones this way!

A house in South Bethany and its architect and builder have won a 2017 Integrity Windows and Doors Red Diamond Achiever Award award for their work on the house in the annual competition.
Architect Scott Edmonston of SEA Studio Architects and Shay Gallo of Shay Gallo Construction Inc. won the award for their work with the Integrity windows and doors from Marvin.
“I think Integrity likes modern architecture,” Edmonston said. “So they wanted to recognize some houses like this one that had a little different take on architecture.”

Bethany Beach Renovation
This oceanfront project in Bethany Dunes, Bethany Beach Delaware is considered a Bethany Beach renovation even though it’s a new house. DNREC moved their beach preservation line west after the existing house was built. If demolished the existing house would be relocated approximately 30 feet west of the existing house. Shifting the house west would have severely diminished the ocean front view and eliminated this house’s unique view to the south.

Is your home prepared for hurricane season? Peak hurricane season is from late August to late November. Currently, the National Hurricane Center is projecting Matthew, the first Category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, could take a path toward the Delmarva Peninsula. These storms are unpredictable and residents of Sussex County, especially coastal residents, should be on heightened awareness.
Big Storms = Big Damage
In 2016 (as of July), there were eight weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States. These events included two flooding events and six severe storm events. Overall, these events resulted in the deaths of 30 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted.
